The FLAG Con Story

In 2023, a group of local Ithaca gamers worked together to launch the first annual Finger Lakes Area Gaming Convention, with one simple mission: to create an inclusive experience that would bring people together through gaming. Though there were many challenges and obstacles to the inaugural convention, the 2023 FLAG Con welcomed 325 guests in our first year, thanks to the support of our wonderful local gaming community! Now on our third consecutive year, FLAG Con has continued to grow and open new avenues for participation. As we look ahead, we hope FLAG Con continues to evolve as a staple of our upstate New York landscape -- come join the fun every November in Ithaca, NY and Let Your Geek Flag Fly!

FLAG Con started in 2023, welcoming 325 guests to the Hotel Ithaca. Some first-year highlights were:
-
A surprise Saturday-night Domino's Pizza delivery for the whole con!
-
Two board game tournaments, including a CATAN national qualifier.
-
Guests from Philadelphia, Toronto, and Vermont.
In 2024, we moved to the then-brand-new Ithaca Downtown Conference Center, welcoming @500 guests. Some highlights were:
-
F.L.A.M.B. -- FLAG Con's all-con game
-
Our 1st cosplay contest
-
Our game library growing to 300+ games.
-
A solid exhibitor hall
-
The world premiere of Stillfleet's Robot Hospital game
-
The gorgeous new space.
Guest Reviews

Thrilling
72 Hours of solid games, TTRPGs, community and art--I'm still riding the dopamine over a week later.

Community
I'll give FLAG Con the best praise I know: I'm an introvert. I hate being in public. FLAG Con is the one time of the year I genuinely enjoy being around hundreds of humans. These are my people.

Big Experience in Cozy City
For a small town like Ithaca, Flag Con feels like it belongs in a big city!

Ithaca Downtown Conference Center
We are proud to host FLAG Con at the Ithaca Downtown Conference Center for a second year. The two-story IDCC is the nation's first all-electric conference center, and is state of the art. Our guests appreciate the nursing room, the IDCC staff's attentiveness to their needs, the proximity to The Commons, and the food and beverage offerings during the FLAG Con.
FLAG Con Code of Conduct

Guiding Principle:
At FLAG Con, we believe great games begin with great community. We welcome and celebrate attendees of all identities and backgrounds–-except those rooted in hate or exclusion. Together, we build a culture grounded in respect, curiosity, and care-–for one another and for the games we love.
All attendees, exhibitors, vendors, guests and volunteers at FLAG Con are required to comply with state and federal laws, venue policies, and the following code of conduct. Organizers will enforce this code throughout the event. We expect cooperation from all participants to help ensure a safe and fun environment for everybody. If you have a question about a certain policy or guideline, be sure to read through all of our policies, but if that still doesn’t answer your question, email flagconithaca@gmail.com.
Everyone should observe common sense rules for behavior, personal interaction, courtesy, and respect. Harassing or offensive behavior will not be tolerated. FLAG Con reserves the right to revoke, without refund, the badge of any participant not in compliance with this policy.
What to do:
Our event is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, religion (or lack thereof), or preferred gaming style. Please use the pronouns on participants’ badges. We do not tolerate harassment, intimidation, or abuse of conference participants or venue staff in any form. Please take care of yourselves and each other. If you need help seek out a FLAG Con volunteer.
Photography Policy
By entering FLAG Con convention space, you are entering an area where photography, audio and video recording may occur in public and program spaces. If you would prefer not to be photographed, please communicate directly and politely with anyone taking pictures.
Cameras and recording devices are permitted in program and panel rooms but cannot be used to reproduce the presentation and must not interfere with other fans’ enjoyment of the presentation. Any recording of panels or programs is allowed only for personal use and not for broadcast in any form.
What to do if you witness or experience a Code of Conduct violation:
Please reach out to a FLAG Con volunteer, ideally at the time of the incident and in person. If you are more comfortable reporting privately, you may also email us at flagconithaca@gmail.com
What not to do:
Harassment
Harassment is any unwanted contact, which includes (but is not limited to): physical or verbal threats; unwelcome attention; stalking; unwanted photography or recording; offensive behavior; use of physical force; behavior that creates a disturbance or is dangerous; using sexually explicit or offensive language or conduct; excessive profanity; obscene gestures; use of racial, religious, sexual, political, gender, ability, ethnic slurs, or any other targeted comments which are intended to cause personal offense to another FLAG Con participant, either in-person at the event or through social media channels.
If a person tells you “no,” desist immediately.
Animals
Service animals are allowed in the venue. Service animals are defined as animals that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability.
Please note that emotional support animals and pets are not permitted inside the venue, in accordance with ADA regulations.

Use good judgement as regards alcohol and other substances. Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages outside of authorized areas is prohibited.
Smoking, including the use of electronic smoking devices, is not allowed inside any of the convention facilities, including public areas and participating hotels. Smoking and the use of electronic smoking devices is allowed outside in designated smoking areas. Cigarette butt litter is a hazard to the environment. Please do your part to keep Ithaca “gorges” and dispose of your trash in the proper receptacles.
Illegal substances at FLAG Con will not be tolerated.

Uniforms of current active service members are not allowed as costumes. These include uniforms for the police, active military, security guards, deputies, fire marshals, paramedics, etc.
